Specification questions

Questions About Grades and Tolerances

How do AISI grades map to EN/DIN and JIS designations?

The common equivalents are 304 to 1.4301 and SUS 304, 304L to 1.4307 and SUS 304L, 316 to 1.4401 and SUS 316, 316L to 1.4404 and SUS 316L, 430 to 1.4016 and SUS 430, 409 to 1.4512 and SUS 409, and 201 to 1.4372 and SUS 201. Quote whichever standard your drawing uses; the equivalent is confirmed in writing before production.

Which surface finish suits which application?

No.1 is hot-rolled, annealed and pickled with a matte surface, used on plate and HR coil. 2B is the most common cold-rolled finish, smooth and lightly reflective. BA is bright annealed and near-mirror. No.4 is a brushed satin with directional grain, common in architecture and kitchen equipment. Mirror (No.8) is fully polished.

What thickness and width ranges are available?

Cold-rolled coil and sheet run 0.3 to 6.0 mm up to 1500 mm wide; hot-rolled coil and plate run 3.0 to 120 mm up to 2000 mm wide; circles run 0.4 to 3.0 mm in diameters of 100 to 1200 mm; tubes and pipes run 0.5 to 6.0 mm wall in diameters of 6 to 219 mm. These are indicative — tighter tolerances and non-standard sizes are available.

What information should an enquiry contain?

Grade or the standard you work to, dimensions including tolerance, finish, tonnage, destination port and Incoterm. With those six items a quotation and a lead time can be returned without a round of clarification, usually within one business day.
